What's to know about Art Tangen, the Square Dance Caller?
He began Square Dancing with the Charles City (IA) Twisters in 1970. Art's parents, Gwen and JC, were Square Dancers and along with his sister, June. It was a family activity.
Art has been calling since 1979. Initially, he began calling to explore a curiosity and that led to extra spending money while attending college. He began calling full-time in 1983 and traveled the contiguous United States yearly.
Now he calls locally, in Albuquerque, for Club AJ, a Plus Level club. He still travels to call for various special dances and festivals.
Calling Career Highlights:
Art is proficient in all programs through Advanced. He finds satisfaction watching friendship set to a lively square dance beat.
Square Dance Calling has afforded him the opportunity to call in some unusual Places and for some unusual groups, most notably Saudi Arabia – Red Sea Squares and Anchorage, AK – Dudes and Dames. The Anchorage trip was during February - who goes to Alaska in February?!?!?!
His other hobby is working for New York Life as a Director, Long Term Care, Central Division and is based in Albuquerque.
Art and Linda, whom he met while out Country Western Dancing, have been married since November 1999.
Where has Art been all these years?
Art moved to Albuquerque NM in 1989 where he called for the Duke City Singles, Club AJ and the Los Alamos Mountain Mixers (in White Rock NM), along with other local clubs. While in New Mexico, Art attended the University of New Mexico and attained a degree in Construction Engineering in 1995.
In August 2000, Art and Linda moved to San Antonio, TX. They were there for 3 1/2 yrs. He was the club caller for the Astro Twirlers and Club AJ. He also had the opportunity to call for other clubs in the state. Art’s job moved them once again in May 2004. That move was to Wichita KS – where they stayed for 3 1/2 yrs. He called for many dances in the area and around the state of Kansas. One more move in October 2007 - they came home to Albuquerque, NM.
